Guys, you’re heading to DC on Independence Day??? The crowds are gonna be awesomely huge. Join the queue at Capitol Hill for the annual concert + fireworks. Worth the four hour wait.

Yeah! It was a happy coincidence, really, we didn’t plan it so much as realised half way through our plans and kept with it since then. We’re also in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day, which we only realised after we’d booked! Crazy.
Thanks for the tips, too – I didn’t know there was a concert, though I had suspected that fireworks might be occurring… Also I didn’t know you’d lived in the US – when/where?

I was in the U.S. for a year, half of it in D.C. If you’re not keen on the massive crowd, head to the Iwo Jima memorial aka United States Marine Corp Memorial near Arlington cemetery. You’ll get a hill-top view of DC, overlooking the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. Lovely sight, really. One of the best in the North Virginia/DC area, plus you’ll beat the swarm of stinky, sweaty bodies.
Oh, don’t miss the Smithsonian Folklife Festival too! It happens every year in July – one of DC’s biggest annual event and it happens on the Mall. (yes, yes, i’m whoring DC but i love that place so!)
If you get a chance, try to catch sunrise on the Brooklyn Bridge, NYC. I was moved to tears, but ah, i’m a big fat wuss that way.
Have fun getting smashed on Guinness this St Paddy’s!

and make sure that when you are in NYC that you go to the SoL very early – get the first ferry to avoid the crowds…and plan a whole day just walking the shops

And Danny, when you get to the Arlington Cemetery to see JFK’s grave, and see the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, your mother laid a wreath there on behalf of I think ‘Camp America’ at a ceremony in 1974. The Smithsonian Museum is also a ‘must see’…moon rocks, rockets, sputniks etc.

Is the return time from LA still the same ie 5.30pm arrival in melbourne? I seem to recall Tash telling me that it was an earlier time in the morning – not that I’m planning ahead but merely trying to plan my return from Caroline’s wedding in Darwin!
BTW you should see my beautiful nails polished for the wedding last week!!! (Martin’s niece). They do however interfere with typing and you know how slow I am normally so imagine that multiplied by a factor of 4 plus all the mistakes from keys wrongly hit! Oh the price of beauty!

Dan & Tash, when you’re ready, I have a list of suggestions for New York on the cheap. There are places you can eat for free even! (Though I think the menu might be somewhat limited.) Also free or very cheap musical events.
